At the time of the incident, which occurred on a Sunday morning on the westbound side of Interstate 70, Fetterman was accompanied by his wife Gisele, The New York Post reports.

“John and Gisele were involved in a car accident with another driver… [and] were evaluated at a local hospital. John was treated for a bruised shoulder and they were discharged that afternoon. They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock [Pa.],” the spokesperson said.

Maryland State Police provided additional insights, noting that the crash occurred “shortly before 8 a.m.”

54-year-old Fetterman (D-PA) was driving his Chevrolet Traverse when he collided with another vehicle “for unknown reasons.”

The police statement continued, stating, “No citations were issued. The crash investigation remains active and ongoing.”

Both Fetterman, his spouse, and the other vehicle’s driver received medical assessments at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, WV, a facility just past the state line near the site of the crash in western Maryland, FOX 29 reports.

“On Sunday morning, John and Gisele were involved in a car accident with another driver. Out of an abundance of caution, they were evaluated at a local hospital. John was treated for a bruised shoulder and they were discharged that afternoon. They are doing well and happy to be back in Braddock, [Pennsylvania],” reads an official statement from Fetterman’s office.

On Monday evening, Senator Fetterman and his wife posted a video update on their recovery on X, showcasing themselves with frozen peas from Harris Teeter and Tylenol.

“You might have heard G and I were in a car accident yesterday. Thank you all for the well wishes. Not the best way to spend our 16th wedding anniversary but we’re doing well and happy to be back home in Braddock with the family,” Fetterman tweeted.

Senator Fetterman has experienced several health challenges in recent years.

Notably, he suffered a stroke in May 2022 during his tenure as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor while he was campaigning for the Senate.

Following this health scare, medical professionals equipped him with a pacemaker and a defibrillator.

In early 2023, the 6-foot-8 senator admitted himself to Walter Reed Hospital for over a month to receive treatment for clinical depression.

Fetterman has recently been notable for his outspoken support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas—an advocacy not widely shared within his party.
