MASSIVE RECALL WARNING

Nearly one million bottles of Costco’s Kirkland prosecco are being recalled after reports of spontaneous shattering that injured at least one customer, raising serious questions about foreign manufacturing standards and corporate accountability.

Story Snapshot

  • Over 940,000 bottles of Kirkland Signature Prosecco were recalled due to laceration hazards from spontaneous shattering.
  • At least 10 reports of bottles breaking without handling, resulting in one injury requiring medical attention.
  • An Italian-manufactured product was sold across 12 Midwestern states for months despite known defects.
  • Second recall of the same product within months, suggesting ongoing quality control failures.

Dangerous Defect Injures Customers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an urgent warning about Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG bottles that can shatter without warning.

F&F Fine Wines International Inc., the manufacturer, has documented at least 10 incidents of bottles breaking spontaneously, including cases where bottles exploded without being touched.

One customer sustained lacerations serious enough to require medical treatment, highlighting the severity of this manufacturing defect.

Widespread Distribution Across Midwest

Costco sold these defective bottles across twelve Midwestern states between April and August 2025, putting hundreds of thousands of families at risk. The affected stores span Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Customers paid approximately $8 per bottle for what they believed was a quality Italian import, only to receive a product that could literally explode in their homes.

Repeat Offense Raises Quality Control Questions

This marks the second recall of the identical product within just months, after Costco initially recalled the same prosecco in September 2025.

The repeated safety failures suggest systemic quality control problems with the Italian manufacturer, F&F Fine Wines International Inc., which operates under the name Ethica Wines.

American consumers deserve better oversight of foreign-manufactured products, especially those that can cause physical harm when used as intended.

Consumer Safety Instructions Critical

The CPSC warns customers never to attempt to open these bottles and to immediately wrap them in paper towels or plastic bags before disposal. The affected bottles display the universal product code 196633883742 and Costco item number 1879870.

They feature distinctive green glass with purple foil and purple labeling. Families should check their wine storage areas immediately, as these bottles can shatter without any external pressure or handling.
