In a tragic and shocking turn of events, a seemingly loving mother made a negligent decision that would lead to tragedy.

Maya Hernandez faces involuntary manslaughter charges after abandoning her sons, ages 1 and 2, in a locked car during a cosmetic procedure in a deadly heatwave.

Temperatures soared to 101 degrees, and the air conditioning automatically shut off after an hour.

Hernandez was arrested after the June 29 incident outside a med spa in Bakersfield, California.

Police reported that despite staff offering to let her children wait inside, Hernandez chose to leave one-year-old Amillio Gutierrez and his two-year-old brother strapped in their car seats.

At that time, she underwent a cosmetic procedure that reportedly lasted only 15-20 minutes.

However, she never checked on her children for approximately two and a half hours.

The consequences proved fatal. When finally discovered, Amillio was foaming at the mouth and suffering a seizure. His body temperature had reached a deadly 107 degrees.

Despite emergency efforts, he died at the hospital. His older brother survived the ordeal and has been placed in child protective custody.

Investigators estimate the children were without air conditioning for at least 90 minutes after the vehicle’s automatic shut-off feature disabled the engine.

The children remained trapped in their car seats as temperatures climbed to lethal levels.

“They were strapped in their car seats. They couldn’t even get up to save themselves. She literally locked them in their car seats and shut their doors,” said Katie Martinez, Amillio’s grandmother.

Even more troubling, a nurse at the spa revealed that Hernandez had previously asked if she could bring her children but failed to mention having them with her upon arrival.

When offered accommodations for the children, with a staff member saying “Sure, if you don’t mind them waiting in the waiting room, hun,” Hernandez declined, choosing instead to leave them locked in the vehicle.

Adding to the family tragedy, the boys’ father, currently incarcerated, learned of his son’s death from a jail chaplain.

Meanwhile, the heartbroken grandmother organized a vigil and candlelight ceremony at Zalid Park to honor Amillio’s memory and raise awareness about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles.

“I have been tortured by the thought that they were in there alone. And that when they were found, the ambulance and paramedics just snatched them up and started working on them. It was just a horrible experience,” Martinez shared through tears.

Despite the criminal charges, Martinez described her daughter as “a really loving mom” who had never shown such neglect before.

“She wasn’t like that. Those boys loved her. They really relied on her,” Martinez said.

Hernandez reportedly admitted to investigators that she knew it was irresponsible to leave her children in the car.

She now faces involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty charges, with bail set at over $1 million. She is scheduled to appear in court on July 14.

Amillio’s aunt, Makayla Kirkland, recalled her final moments with him:

“I got to walk around with him, just him alone, and put him in the stroller. I got at least that last moment before dropping him off at home… never knowing this would happen.”

This devastating case highlights yet another preventable tragedy where a child’s life was sacrificed for a parent’s convenience and vanity.

The family now hopes their devastating loss will spark change and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
