A Bloody Juneteenth Weekend in Chicago

Starting Friday evening, June 19, 2026, gunfire erupted across Chicago in at least 24 separate shooting incidents. By Sunday night, at least 7 people were dead and 38 more were injured. Among the victims: a 21-year-old shot in the chest on Sunday, an 18-year-old struck on Saturday, and a 50-year-old shot Friday night.

The scale of the violence — spread across a holiday weekend meant for community celebration — shocked even those used to Chicago’s chronic gun problem.[1]

The worst single incident happened in Princeton Park on the South Side. Two men in a red SUV pulled up to a crowd and opened fire, hitting at least 12 people between the ages of 17 and 47. Police recovered more than 100 pieces of evidence at the scene.

A street pastor on site said the night should have been about fireworks, not gunshots.[8] The brazenness of the attack — firing into a crowd in broad public view — underscored just how little fear some criminals have of consequences in the city.

Trump Calls for Federal Action

President Trump responded quickly on Truth Social, stating he could make Chicago a safe city within one month if given the chance. He renewed his call for federal intervention in the Democrat-run city.[2] Trump’s frustration is easy to understand.

Chicago has been a symbol of failed liberal governance for years. Soft-on-crime policies, revolving-door courts, and underfunded police have left law-abiding residents — especially in the city’s poorest neighborhoods — paying the price with their lives.

Chicago’s violence numbers back up the concern. The city recorded 105 homicides through the first week of April 2026, up from 98 in the same stretch of 2025.[3] That upward trend is moving in the wrong direction.

Meanwhile, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s office did not respond to press inquiries about Trump’s call for federal help — a silence that speaks volumes about the state’s willingness to admit its approach is failing.[2]

Local Leaders Push Back — but Offer Little

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to the weekend carnage with a statement saying, “Violence has no place in our city, and those responsible will be held accountable.”

Community organizer Tio Hardiman said his Violence Interrupters group helped prevent more than 30 shootings this year through outreach and engagement. These efforts deserve credit. But when 7 people are still dead and 38 are wounded in a single weekend, it’s hard to call the current approach a success.[12]

The debate over military intervention versus community programs is real and worth having. Some focused policing strategies have shown results in other cities. But Chicago’s residents — especially those in the most dangerous neighborhoods — deserve more than talking points and press releases.

They deserve safety. Trump’s call for federal action may be blunt, but it reflects a truth that local Democratic leaders keep avoiding: what they are doing right now is not working. The body count proves it.[1]
