(TheProudRepublic.com) – It seems that former Democrat Senator Bob Menendez’s corruption actions will lead him soon to prison as his sentence is scheduled for late January, revealing a sordid story of bribery involving gold bars, cash, and luxury cars.
U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein has denied Menendez’s request to delay his sentencing until after his wife’s trial, setting the stage for a January 29 reckoning.
This decision comes despite Menendez’s lawyers’ attempts to paint a sympathetic picture of the disgraced senator supporting his wife through her health struggles.
Once the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Menendez now faces the consequences of a 16-count conviction on corruption charges.
The charges stem from a five-year scheme where he accepted bribes from three New Jersey businessmen, including gold bars, stacks of cash, and a Mercedes-Benz convertible.
While Menendez’s wife, Nadine, has pleaded not guilty and will appear in court on February 5, the senator’s fate is sealed.
Two of his co-conspirators were convicted alongside him, while a third flipped and cooperated with the government, further exposing the web of corruption.
“Sentencing him during his wife’s trial will of course take a tremendous emotional toll on both Senator Menendez and his family,” his lawyers stated.
The audacity of Menendez’s defense team is truly astounding as they argued that sentencing him during his wife’s trial would be “too much to ask of any man.”
While Menendez may be one of the few caught red-handed, one can only imagine how many other politicians are engaging in similar schemes, selling out the American people for personal gain.
