(TheProudRepublic.com) – Displaying his powerful king-making abilities, former President Donald Trump has claimed responsibility for Senator Joe Manchin’s decision not to pursue re-election in 2024, attributing it to his endorsement of Jim Justice for the U.S. Senate from West Virginia.
Trump proclaimed this development on Truth Social shortly after Manchin announced his retirement, which he described as “one of the toughest decisions of my life.” Trump, in contrast, framed it as the reality of the current political landscape.
Trump expressed his belief that his support for Jim Justice significantly influenced the political dynamics, leading to Manchin’s withdrawal from the race. “Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Looking good for Big Jim!” he posted on the platform.
Recent polling data, such as a survey from Emerson College, underscored the challenge facing Manchin, showing Justice leading by a margin of 41% to 28%. This polling scenario possibly contributed to Manchin’s contemplation over recent months regarding his political future. Preceding Manchin’s announcement, Newsmax reported that his retirement was anticipated.
In his statement, Manchin reflected on his career and accomplishments for West Virginia. “After months of deliberation and long conversations with my family, I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia. I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate,” he declared.
There has been speculation surrounding Manchin’s future plans, including a potential presidential run under the No Labels party. He hinted at future endeavors focused on national unity, stating, “But what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together.”
The Cook Political Report has now classified the West Virginia Senate seat as “solid Republican,” suggesting an almost certain gain for the GOP in the 2024 Senate race. They remarked, “Ultimately, Manchin may have already been a dead man walking, but his exit makes it official.”
Jim Justice will face competition within the party, particularly from conservative Representative Alex Mooney, as he vies for the now-open West Virginia Senate seat.
