Trump Pick Quits – Conservatives Are Glad He Did

(TheProudRepublic.com) – In a striking development that conservatives are glad about, Chad Chronister has withdrawn from the nomination to lead the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) that President-elect Donald Trump initially proposed.

Chronister, the sheriff of Hillsborough County, Florida, initially described the nomination as “the honor of a lifetime.”

However, he quickly faced intense scrutiny from conservatives over his past actions and statements that seemed to contradict core conservative principles.

In a statement announcing his withdrawal, Chronister said, “Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I’ve concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration.”

This sudden reversal raises questions about the thoroughness of the vetting process and whether Chronister was truly prepared for the role.

One of the main points of contention was Chronister’s actions during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, he arrested a pastor for violating COVID-19 safety orders.

This move drew sharp criticism from conservative circles, who viewed it as an overreach of government power and a violation of religious freedom.

“Shame on this pastor, their legal staff and the leaders of this staff for forcing us to do our job. That’s not what we wanted to do during a declared state of emergency. We are hopeful that this will be a wakeup call,” Chronister said at the time.

U.S. Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY), a staunch defender of individual liberties, did not mince words when he criticized Chronister’s actions.

He stated that Trump’s nominee for head of DEA should be “disqualified” for ordering the arrest of a pastor who defied COVID lockdowns.

Further complicating matters, a video from 2023 resurfaced where Chronister stated that his office “does not engage in federal immigration enforcement activities. We do not target individuals based on their immigration status. That’s the authority of federal agencies.”

This stance directly contradicts President Trump’s strong focus on immigration enforcement, a cornerstone of his campaign and a top priority for his supporters.

Additionally, Chronister faced criticism for his perceived progressive stances, including his participation in the Tampa Pride Parade and support for red flag laws.

The withdrawal of Chronister’s nomination showed the importance of thoroughly vetting candidates for high-level positions to ensure they align with conservative values and the America First agenda.

It also highlights the need for nominees who can withstand scrutiny and have a proven track record of upholding conservative principles, especially in critical areas such as law enforcement and immigration policy.
