Sending ripples across the political landscape and his party, a top Democrat Senator announced it was time for him to leave, as he is stepping down from the Senate after decades of pushing a liberal agenda.
Watch the video below.
Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), a key architect of the controversial DREAM Act and long-time advocate for immigration reform, announced he will not seek reelection after more than 40 years in Congress, setting the stage for a heated primary battle.
Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat since 2005, officially announced his retirement after months of speculation about his political future.
At 80 years old, the liberal stalwart has been a fixture in Washington since first winning election to the House in 1982 before moving to the Senate in 1997.
“The decision of whether to run for reelection has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States senator. But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch,” Durbin said in his announcement.
He continued:
“I have to be honest about this. There are good people in the wings, good people on the bench ready to serve, and they can fight this fight just as effectively as I can. There comes a point where you have to face reality that this is the time to leave for me.”
As a trusted Obama ally who helped elevate the former president to the White House, Durbin has wielded significant influence in Democrat circles.
His retirement marks the fifth senator over age 65 to announce they are stepping down, signaling a broader generational shift within the chamber that conservatives hope will create opportunities to advance America First priorities.
Throughout his career, Durbin has championed liberal causes that have often faced strong conservative opposition.
He was a key player in creating DACA, the controversial Obama-era program that conservatives have criticized as executive overreach on immigration policy.
As chairman of the Judiciary Committee, he shepherded the confirmation of Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, Ketanji Brown Jackson, while opposing Trump’s nomination of Amy Coney Barrett.
Moreover, his exit creates a scramble among Illinois Democrats seeking to fill his seat.
Potential candidates include Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Rep. Lauren Underwood, and Rep. Robin Kelly.
All of them would likely continue pushing the progressive agenda Durbin has advanced.
While Durbin’s seat is considered safely Democrat, his retirement signals turmoil within Democrat leadership ranks.
His retirement creates a vacuum in the Senate Democrat leadership team, which has remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades.
The race for Durbin’s No. 2 position will likely foreshadow future power struggles within the party.
In a rare moment of bipartisanship, Durbin co-sponsored the First Step Act, a criminal justice reform law signed by President Trump in 2018.
However, his liberal record on immigration, abortion, and gun control has frequently put him at odds with constitutional conservatives.

Furthermore, his departure comes as Democrats face mounting challenges nationwide, with voters increasingly rejecting their progressive policies on crime, inflation, and border security.
His retirement announcement included a backhanded swipe at President Trump, whom he characterized as a “threat to democracy.” This revealed the partisan nature that has defined much of his career.
For conservatives who have long opposed Durbin’s legislative priorities, his retirement offers a chance for new voices in the Senate.
Those might be more willing to collaborate on issues like securing the border, protecting constitutional rights, and limiting government overreach.
Although Illinois remains a Democrat stronghold, the changing national political landscape gives patriots reason to be optimistic about future opportunities to oppose the progressive agenda Durbin championed throughout his lengthy career.
