Three members of “The Squad” have been pushing for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ impeachment following the revelation that for years he had been accepting luxury gifts from a major Republican donor that he did not disclose.
However, many other Democrats are hoping for lesser measures to handle this case.
Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) have all called for Thomas’ impeachment following the revelation that for the past two decades, he had been receiving luxurious gifts and trips from a Republican billionaire donor without ever filing them in his disclosures.
The ProPublica report exposed the gifts that Thomas had received over the years, but despite the criticism and outrage caused by the report, only the three progressive House Democrats have called for impeachment so far.
Last week, Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to write that this case extends “beyond party or partisanship.” She added that “this degree of corruption is shocking — almost cartoonish” while also claiming that Thomas needed to be impeached. Omar also took to Twitter on that same day to write that “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Clarence Thomas needs to be impeached.”
Tlaib also pointed out that the public’s confidence in the court was at “an all-time low” before slamming Thomas for receiving the gifts and trips from the Republican billionaire, while also “doing the bidding of right-wing extremists from the bench.” She proceeded to write on Twitter that Thomas needed to be impeached.
