As history-making Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing kicks off, news of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s hospitalization surfaced, grabbing headlines.
In a statement released by the Supreme Court on Sunday (March 2020), it was revealed that 73-year-old Thomas had been admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. on Friday evening (March 18) with flu-like symptoms.
According to the statement, Thomas underwent testing, which discovered he had an infection, which was being treated “with intravenous antibiotics.” The statement also revealed the Supreme Court justice is resting while his symptoms “are abating,” as he expects to be “released from the hospital in a day or two.”
The press release noted that Thomas will still “participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present,” using “briefs, transcripts, and audio of the oral arguments” to inform his decision.
