(TheProudRepublic.com) – Highlighting the grave dangers outdoor enthusiasts face in America’s rugged wilderness, a tragic avalanche in Wyoming’s backcountry has claimed the life of an experienced skier.
The incident, which occurred in a remote area near Grand Teton National Park, serves as a clear reminder that a fun adventure can also have deadly outcomes.
The avalanche was triggered by a group of four skiers ascending a mountain at an elevation of 10,400 feet.
It resulted in the death of 36-year-old nurse Kenneth Goff from Lander, Wyoming.
Goff was an instructor at the National Outdoor Leadership School and had extensive wilderness experience.
Even so, he fell victim to a large slab of snow nearly 5 feet thick that broke away, fully burying him and partially burying another skier.
This tragic incident marks the fifth avalanche-related death in the United States this winter.
However, it is crucial to remember that these activities are risky and participants are usually aware of the dangers involved.
The challenging rescue operation took about four hours due to adverse weather conditions, preventing helicopter access.
Teton County Search and Rescue teams faced significant obstacles in reaching the scene, demonstrating the limitations of rescue efforts in extreme conditions.
“This serves as an important reminder of how much longer a mission can take when the helicopter is grounded,” the team said after it took them four hours to reach the victims.
The National Weather Service advises avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees and carrying avalanche rescue equipment.
The recent series of snowstorms affecting Wyoming and the surrounding states has created hazardous conditions, and winter storm warnings have been issued for 23 states.
“Data from the last 10 years shows a spike in natural avalanches this time of year,” said Public Information Officer Kelsy Been at the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
As the community mourns Goff’s death, his friends and family remember him as an experienced outdoorsman who understood the risks associated with his passion.
