This was downright strange.
Social media users were quick to criticize Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for what has become known as the “Biden whisper.”
Taking to Instagram to answer a question asked by a follower about how she responded, “when people accuse you of being a ‘socialist’?” AOC recorded herself whispering that “most people don’t really know what capitalism is.”
“Let me tell you a secret,” The New York Democratic started her response to her 8.5 million followers, “Most people don’t really know what capitalism is.”
She continued saying, “Most people don’t even know what socialism is,” adding that “most people are not capitalists because they don’t have capitalist money. They’re not billionaires.”
After a clip of her response began circulating on Twitter, users were quick to mock the lawmaker for her “creepy” whisper, which was compared to President Joe Biden’s frequent whispering.
Republican Congressional candidate Lavern Spicer ridiculed AOC, using the same opening line as the Democratic lawmaker in her tweet.
“Pssst. I’ll tell you a secret: AOC is an embarrassment to Congress and to women everywhere,” Spicer tweeted.
Referencing the notion that AOC is “one of the most powerful women,” author Gad Saad joked, “Good luck USA. You had a good run.”
Political commentator Tim Pool tweeted, “AOC should have googled the definition of capitalist before making this video I hope the ASMR channel works for her.”
Ocasio-Cortez continued the whisper throughout her response, concluding that labels aren’t as important as policies.
