Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has called for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached following the revelation that for decades he has been accepting lavish gifts from a billionaire Republican donor without ever disclosing them.
According to a report by ProPublica, Thomas had accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in luxury trips using yachts and jets owned by Dallas businessman Harlan Crow. The investigation also noted that Thomas had never disclosed any of these trips on any of his forms. Crow is known for his lavish donations to many Republican candidates.
Ocasio-Cortez called out Thomas for these actions stating that this was not a matter of partisanship. She proceeded to argue that “This degree of corruption is shocking — almost cartoonish.” Ocasio-Cortez posted her call for Thomas to be impeached on Twitter.
The New York Congresswoman added that this report also reflects badly on Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, stating that “the Roberts court will be known for rank corruption, erosion of democracy, and the stripping of human rights.”
Other Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), have also called for an investigation into Thomas following the report. Whitehouse specifically stated that based on this there should not only be an independent investigation into the Supreme Court but the entirety of Congress.
In a statement, Crow said that while Thomas and his wife had accepted his gifts, they had never been the ones to ask for them.
