This confrontation, which occurred on Saturday evening, ultimately resulted in the death of the suspect involved.

The altercation took place at approximately 5:15 p.m. local time after officers were summoned to the Capitol View neighborhood of Atlanta.

They were responding to a report concerning “a man armed with a weapon who the caller felt was a threat to the community,” according to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum during a press briefing.

Upon their arrival, the officers encountered the suspect, who was armed with both a handgun and a knife.

“During that encounter, there was a struggle, there was gunfire that resulted in three of our officers being injured,” Chief Schierbaum stated as he detailed the violent engagement.

“It also resulted in the death of the individual that was armed with the handgun,” he added.

Following the incident, the injured officers were promptly transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The extent of their injuries varied; one officer sustained a shoulder injury, another was wounded in the leg, and a third officer received a graze wound.

Chief Schierbaum reported that two of the officers were currently undergoing surgical procedures.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens provided an update on the officers’ conditions during the same news conference held outside the hospital.

“They are alive and stable, they are alert, conscious and breathing,” he said.

Chief Schierbaum further revealed that two of the officers involved are 31 years old and have each served four years with the department.

The third officer, aged 28, has been a part of the force for five months.

Despite the detailed account of the officers’ rapid response and subsequent injuries, the exact location of the shooting and the events leading up to it remain unclear.

Initially, the call that brought the officers to the scene was tied to a commercial area.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, as reiterated by Chief Schierbaum.

The identities of the officers and the suspect were not disclosed at the time of the briefing.
