(TheProudRepublic.com) – In a shocking display of urban violence, a mother was used as a human shield during a massive shooting outside a Bronx convenience store.
Six other innocent people, including the woman’s young daughter, were gunned down.
The incident occurred shortly before evening on a busy street in the Bronx and left a 40-year-old mother shot in the stomach and her 12-year-old daughter with a bullet wound to the leg.
Four other men, aged 18 to 21, also suffered gunshot wounds to their arms and legs. The victims were all transported to a nearby hospital and were reported to be in stable condition as of New Year’s Eve morning.
NYPD Interim Chief of Department John Chell described the horrific scene, stating:
“We had a brazen and heartless attack by two shooters who opened fire in the middle of the street and into a crowded convenience store, striking six people.”

Also, surveillance footage revealed a disturbing detail of the attack while Chief Chell explained that “the mother was used as a shield by the intended targets of the shooting.”
“If you can imagine, (the) mom and daughter are up against the counter and the two intended targets come in and bump into them, and then turn the mother around as they’re being shot at,” Chief Chell elaborated.
The shooters, described as two Black men – one wearing a black Nike sweatsuit and the other in a grey hoodie – fled the scene after firing 10 to 15 shots, leaving behind shattered glass and a community in fear.
Local residents expressed their shock and concern over the incident. “Whoever shot these people, they had no regard for human life,” said Jamal Wilson.
“A lot of people were running. The strip was very crowded. So you wouldn’t know who did it,” recounted Beverly Taylor, another witness.
While New York City officials tout a decrease in shooting incidents for 2024, this attack serves as a reminder that the streets are far from safe.
Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to justice: “Those numbers mean nothing when you see a horrific incident like that. It is clear we’re going to find everyone that’s responsible and bring them to justice.”
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
