(TheProudRepublic.com) – Legendary singer and leader of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, was devastated when he learned that his beloved friend and iconic singer, Marianne Faithfull, died at 78.
See the tweet below.
Faithfull was an unforgettable voice of the 1960s British Invasion and her death left a profound cultural legacy behind.
Her evocative track “As Tears Go By” became synonymous with this transformative era in music.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull. Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family,” the singer’s rep said.
Faithfull emerged in the vibrant London pop scene at the age of 17 when she was discovered by Andrew Loog Oldham, the manager of the Rolling Stones.
Her debut single, “As Tears Go By,” co-authored by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, skyrocketed her to fame.
However, her personal life soon became fodder for tabloids, especially her high-profile relationship with Jagger.
Following her breakup with Jagger, Faithfull’s life spiraled into addiction and homelessness, a testament to the harsh reality behind the glittering music scene.
Yet, her resilience shone through when she staged a comeback with the critically acclaimed album “Broken English” in the late 1970s.
The album, which had a harder sound, even earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, showcasing her punk-edged style and deep voice.
Her talents were not limited to music alone. She captivated audiences with her acting roles alongside esteemed artists like David Bowie and her voice graced stage productions and films, such as “The Girl on a Motorcycle” and “Marie Antoinette.”
Despite facing numerous health challenges like breast cancer, hepatitis C, and COVID-19, Faithfull’s indomitable spirit prevailed.
She left a lasting impact on the arts, with more than 20 albums to her name, the latest being “She Walks in Beauty” in 2021.
Mick Jagger, deeply saddened by her passing, noted:
“I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull. She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”
