Several prominent politicians in the MAGA movement are angry over the news that Hunter Biden has agreed to take a plea deal on federal misdemeanor charges.
The personal struggles and international business dealings of Hunter Biden, the 53-year-old son of President Joe Biden, have come under intense scrutiny from right-wing sources. Many conservatives have made unfounded claims that his father directly affected these matters.
In late 2020, it was confirmed that federal authorities were investigating Hunter Biden for his tax history.
On Tuesday (June 20), Biden agreed to a plea deal concluding the two-year investigation by the U.S. Attorney for Delaware. Part of the deal, Biden will plead guilty to two federal misdemeanor charges for not paying past taxes. Although he still faces a charge for unlawful firearm possession, there is a possibility for dismissal if he meets certain conditions, as stated in court documents obtained by NBC News.
Although Biden pleaded guilty to some charges, many lawmakers in the MAGA movement were outraged on Tuesday, criticizing the outcome as a “sweetheart deal” or nothing more than a minor “traffic ticket.”
Despite significant differences between the two cases, MAGA Republicans have compared the recent federal criminal charges brought against former President Donald Trump in the Mar-a-Lago documents case and the Biden deal.
Many MAGA Republicans have also insinuated that President Biden intervened in his son’s case to secure a lenient deal. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. Taking to social media, some have suggested that if Trump had listened to his lawyers, he could have brokered a similar plea deal.
However, others pointed out that David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney in charge of Biden’s case, was appointed by Trump.
