Vice President Kamala Harris was slammed online after claiming that the majority of Americans would go “bankrupt” if they had to pay for an unexpected $400 expense and pointed out how hard it is for women in the country to get abortions.
On Friday, Harris participated in a moderated discussion concerning “reproductive rights” in Iowa. During the event, she spoke with many women in the state about how they would need to take on the economic hardship of going to a different state in order to receive an abortion if the court decided to allow a state abortion bill to go into effect.
As Harris said during the discussion single parents will be unable to pay the cost of childcare, while other women might lose their job or have to take family leave in order to get access to an abortion. In some cases, they might have to take sick leave if that is an option. From there they will be required to find a way to travel to a different state either by bus, train, or plane which would result in an unexpected $400 expense. This amount is what Harris claimed was between the majority of Americans and bankruptcy.
Many conservatives took to social media to immediately attack Harris on this point, with many pointing out that the financial hardships faced by Americans are the result of the Biden administration’s policies.
Sen. Tim Scott, who is a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, claimed that this was called “Bidenomics” and that since the Biden administration took over Americans’ spending power has dropped by $10,000.
