Following Republican Governors Ron DeSantis (Florida) and Greg Abbott (Texas) transporting migrants to liberal states, Vice President Kamala Harris has blasted the pair for their apparent “dereliction of duty.”
Harris made her remarks during an interview with Vice News. During the interview, she explained her belief that the decision to relocate migrants is “the height of irresponsibility… frankly, a dereliction of duty, when you are an elected leader, to play those kinds of games with human life and human beings.”
Although this week Abbott and DeSantis grabbed headlines for their relocation efforts, Abbott has been bussing migrants to “sanctuary cities” like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. since April this year.
But this week’s move was particularly shocking for many as DeSantis made his first foray into the transportation of migrants by approving two planes carrying 50 migrants to fly from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts on Wednesday (September 14). The Florida Governor promised Wednesday’s flight is “just the beginning.”
Then, on Thursday (September 15), Abbott revealed two buses carrying about 100 migrants arrived at Harris’ doorstep in Washington, D.C., a move he said was made because of comments Harris made last Sunday (September 11) on “Meet the Press” when she asserted the border is “secure.”
Abbott and DeSantis, alongside other Republicans, have been adamant the border crisis was caused by the Biden administration. But, Harris rejects shouldering the blame, saying Trump is to blame.
In the interview with Vice News, Harris said, “Under the previous administration, they decimated a system that was designed to address immigration,” adding, “And so we have been spending, in the last 18 months, an incredible amount of time and work and resources to reconstruct that system.”
