On Wednesday (January 18), Democratic Rep. James Clyburn (S.C.) relayed his belief that President Joe Biden would seek reelection in 2024, sharing a warning with his fellow Democrats not to run against the President.
Speaking to CBS News’s Robert Costa, Clyburn expressed his support for Biden’s reelection bid, saying he is “all in for President Biden.”
The South Carolina Democrat shared that he believes what Biden has accomplished in the last two years made him “deserving of reelection.”
Clyburn added that “irrespective of who the Republicans put up,” Biden would win reelection.
The Democratic lawmaker has been a staunch ally of Biden’s since his 2020 bid for the Presidency, stating on Wednesday that he was grateful he supported Biden because the President had passed “more progressive legislation than any president since Lyndon Baines Johnson.”
Clyburn then pivoted to warning Democrats not to run against Biden in 2024, comparing it to the primary challenge Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy made against former President Jimmy Carter in 1980.
Despite Carter winning the primary challenge, he lost the Presidential race to former President Ronald Reagan, which many blamed on Kennedy’s challenge. Clyburn expressed the same could happen if a Democrat challenges Biden, saying, “the history is very clear on what happens” when a sitting President is challenged.
Clyburn made his comments as more sources have come forward to reveal Biden will be moving ahead with the announcement of his reelection bid, even as he faces fallout from the discovery of unauthorized storage of classified documents.
