With the two-week recess starting many Republicans from House Committees are planning hearings and visits to the U.S.-Mexico border. Republicans have been blaming the Biden administration for the influx of migrant encounters, drug trafficking, and the national security threats brought on by the unsecured border.
They now believe that by being on site they are going to be able to increase public disapproval of the Democratic border policies.
On Thursday, Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) along with freshman House members, Reps. Juan Ciscomani (Ariz.), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (Ore.), Jen Kiggans (Va.), and Derrick Van Orden (Wis.), visited the border. While speaking from the U.S. border, McCarthy claimed that the GOP’s actions were only trying to make the Democrats pay more attention to the situation.
He added that the GOP majority in the House was going to help fix the issue, especially as the Democrats will no longer be able to avoid the situation at the border. McCartju also added that all members of the House are responsible for attending the hearing. He added that the hearing will have people from both sides of the political spectrum.
On Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee investigations and health subcommittees had a joint field hearing in McAllen, Texas, in which it was alleged that President Biden’s policies have contributed to the number of fentanyl deaths and the public health crisis.
On Thursday the House Judiciary Committee is set to also hold a hearing close to Yuma, Arizona.
Border hawks have been positive about the visits of Republicans at the border.
