Who would have expected this to happen?
Democratic politician and former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard implied that former President Barack Obama is behind the Disinformation Governance Board, likening it to George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth.”
On Sunday (May 1), Gabbard tweeted that “Biden is just a frontman,” adding, “Obama, April 21: social media censors ‘don’t go far enough,’ so the government needs to step in to do the job. Six days later, Homeland Security rolls out the ‘Ministry of Truth’ (aka Disinformation Governance Board).”
Gabbard’s tweet referenced a speech Obama gave at Stanford University last week where he argued tech companies are struggling to moderate content on their platforms.
During the speech, Obama noted the progress tech companies had made, saying it was “good news” that “big tech platforms now acknowledge some responsibility for the content on their platforms, and they’re investing in large teams of people to monitor it.”
However, he pointed to some weaknesses, saying that the “sheer volume of content” makes the strategy seem “like a game of Whac-a-Mole,” adding that although employees at these tech giants “are sincere,” this effort “doesn’t go far enough.”
Obama made these remarks before the Biden administration announced it would be launching a Disinformation Governance Board to combat disinformation from spreading online.
Discussing the launch at the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security on Wednesday (April 27), Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said, “The goal is to bring the resources of (DHS) together to address this threat.”
The announcement was met with fierce backlash, with Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas announcing that he would be “introducing a bill to defund” the “unconsitutional and american” Disinformation Board.
