Located in a remote and treacherous area approximately 175 miles south of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, the crash site presented significant challenges for search and rescue teams.
At an elevation of about 6,000 feet, the steep, heavily wooded terrain was blanketed in snow, further complicating recovery efforts.
Army Special Forces, and specialized mountaineering soldiers joined the search, while multiple squadrons, local authorities, and tribal agencies also participated in the extensive operation.
Commander Timothy Warburton of the Electronic Attack Squadron expressed the Navy’s profound grief, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of two beloved Zappers.”
He emphasized the priority of supporting the families of the fallen aviators and ensuring the well-being of the Growler community during this difficult time.
The EA-18G Growler, a variant of the F/A-18 designed for electronic warfare, is a crucial asset in America’s defense arsenal. At $67 million each, each jet represents a significant investment in the nation’s military capabilities.
Moreover, the Electronic Attack Squadron had recently returned from a combat deployment in Yemen, where they defended against missile attacks from Houthi rebels.
During this deployment, the squadron achieved notable distinctions, including the first air-to-air kill in a Growler and the inaugural use of an Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile in combat.
As the Navy shifts from search and rescue to recovery operations, personnel will continue to collect debris and plan for long-term salvage efforts.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, highlighting the military’s commitment to understanding and preventing future tragedies.
