He isn’t backing down.
During a recent interview with CNN, Democrat Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke has just doubled down on gun control and insisted that Americans should not be allowed to possess “weapons of war”.
According to Breitbart, CNN’s Dana Bash brought up video of O’Rourke in 2019 talking gun violence after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. In the clip, O’Rourke said that we were going to take your AR-15 and AK-47 and not let people use them against other Americans ever again.
Bash then asked if this is the same message he would send as governor of Texas.
O’Rourke responded by saying that Texas was a state of proud traditions and responsible gun ownership. He then claimed that Texans didn’t want to see their loved ones harmed with weapons of war. O’Rourke then said that still holds those beliefs and will tighten down on gun ownership in the state of Texas. “So yes, I still hold this view, but I also have been listening to my fellow Texans who are concerned about this idea of permit-less carry that Greg Abbott has signed into law, which allows any Texan to carry a loaded firearm, despite the pleadings of police chiefs and law enforcement from across the state who said it would make their jobs more dangerous and make it harder for them to protect those that they were sworn to serve in their communities,” O’Rourke said.
Texas, generally, has historically been a state very protective of the Second Amendment, but that has started to change a bit in recent years.
