In a shocking incident echoing the lawlessness many Americans fear, bank robbers were both found dead after a tense standoff with police.
56-year-old Shaun Fallon and his 27-year-old son Zachary died from gunshot wounds following their robbery of Chelsea Groton Bank in Connecticut.
The pair wore medical masks as they threatened a teller at the bank around 10:30 a.m.
They passed a note demanding cash and implied they had weapons before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.
This brazen daylight robbery triggered an immediate police response, though the suspects initially evaded capture.
Law enforcement tracked the Fallons to a Super 8 Motel in Groton approximately six hours after the robbery.
When police located their getaway vehicle in the parking lot, a tense standoff ensued as the father and son barricaded themselves inside a room and refused to cooperate with authorities.
During the standoff, the situation escalated when the suspects made alarming threats.
According to police statements, “The suspects, who police said are father and son, told authorities that they had guns and explosives and wouldn’t surrender.”
Taking these threats seriously, authorities evacuated the motel and a nearby business to ensure public safety.
“This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation, and I want to commend the bravery and professionalism of all the law enforcement personnel involved in bringing it to a close,” Groton Police Chief L.J. Fusaro said.
The standoff took a deadly turn around 11:05 p.m. when “two gunshots were heard inside the suspects’ hotel room.”
Police used a drone to assess the situation and discovered “both suspects were incapacitated by apparent gunshot wounds.”
A bomb squad cleared the room, finding no explosives despite the Fallons’ earlier threats.
Moreover, emergency personnel transported both men to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The younger Fallon succumbed to his injuries the following day on June 13. His father fought for his life for three more days before passing away on June 16.
The medical examiner’s office has yet to determine the official cause and manner of death for both men.
Authorities have not released information about who fired the fatal shots or what motivated this father-son crime spree.
The investigation continues, with police requesting information from the public to help piece together the full story.
This tragic incident highlights the serious consequences of criminal activity and the dangers faced by law enforcement officers who must respond to such volatile situations.
The police response successfully contained the threat without injuries to officers or bystanders, demonstrating the effectiveness of proper training and tactical response in crisis situations.
