ALERT: Senator Indicted – Again!

( – In a grander embarrassment for the Democrats and deeper trouble for one of their top faces, US Senator Bob Menendez has just been slapped with multiple new corruption charges after one of his co-defendants decided to testify against him in a high-profile trial.

The legal case against Menendez (D-NJ), the former head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, intensified as prosecutors introduced a dozen new charges, including obstruction of justice and bribery, The Hill reports.

This development came to light on Tuesday with the unveiling of a superseding indictment, bringing Menendez’s total count of criminal charges to 16.

These charges are founded on accusations that he accepted extravagant bribes in return for his political influence and served as an operative for the Egyptian government.

Despite facing earlier charges, Menendez has maintained his innocence and resisted calls for resigning from the Senate.

The fresh charges detail alleged corrupt dealings with three New Jersey businessmen, previously mentioned in earlier indictments.

However, the latest charges directly accuse Menendez of bribery, extortion, and acting as a foreign agent, rather than merely implicating him in conspiracy charges.

This follows the guilty plea of Jose Uribe, one of the businessmen charged with Menendez and his wife, Nadine, alongside Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, who also face new charges.

The prosecution now also charges the defendants with attempting to obstruct justice by conspiring to conceal the bribery scheme during an investigation by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Uribe, through his guilty plea, admitted to conspiring to misrepresent payments made to the Menendez family, intended for securing a Mercedes-Benz convertible, as loans.

However, these payments are alleged by prosecutors to be bribes, with Menendez purportedly agreeing to interfere with the investigation into Uribe.

In exchange for his cooperation, Uribe has committed to providing truthful testimony if called upon during Menendez’s trial, which is scheduled to begin on May 6.

The indictment further accuses Menendez of obstructing justice by misleadingly portraying his awareness of the payments for the convertible and a significant payment made by Hana towards his wife’s mortgage.

“In truth and in fact, and as Menendez well knew, Menendez had learned of both the mortgage company payment and the car payments prior to 2022, and they were not loans, but bribe payments,” the new indictment reads.

In response to the updated charges, Menendez, through his lawyers, described the indictment as a “flagrant abuse of power.”

“The latest charge reveals far more about the government than it says about me,” Menendez said.

“It says that the prosecutors are afraid of the facts, scared to subject their charges to the fair-minded scrutiny of a jury, and unconstrained by any sense of justice or fair play. It says, once and for all, that they will stop at nothing in their zeal to get me,” he concluded.
